W G Grace, the famous Victorian cricketer, was born and grew up in Downend which is a small village about four miles north of Bristol. We were asked to make a mural of Grace to go high up on the wall above the entrance of a new shopping mall which was being built in the area. We placed W G (as he was universally known) sitting dressed in whites with his bat in hand. He is seen in front of the family home ‘Chestnuts’ on whose lawns he famously played his first games of cricket.
