1962 The Hermit Tile Mural

1962 The Hermit Tile Mural - more info
more information

This was the first public commission that I ever did. It was for a public house called The Hermit in Sheffield. I submitted two different designs, one for painted tiles and the other to be in textured and modelled clay. Although this tile design was chosen the other design lead to work being commissioned in the medium of textured ceramic.

This was the first mural that Philippa did using the medium of ceramic mixed with natural stone.
The design incorporates fishes and sea creatures with a backing of the stone, pebbles and fossils which are found in profusion on the beaches of North East Yorkshire.

The school has moved to another site and along with the building this mural is under threat of demolition in 2009. We hope the people in the area will help to try and save it. We would like to hear from anyone who has an information about it.

more information

These two murals commissioned by St. John Fisher Roman Catholic Secondary School in Sheffield, contain two different scenes about St John Fisher, who was executed by King Henry VIII during the English Reformation. In one mural St. John is seen blessing the kneeling executioner. In the other he is seen standing in Heaven, his hand raised in benediction.

When the school was moved to another site both of the panels were re-sited in St Joseph's Church in Handsworth, Sheffield.

This mural was made by pupils of North London Collegiate School under Philippa’s direction. The theme was a psalm of praise - summoning fishes, beasts, men and angels to worship the Lord. Girls from the ages of ten to eighteen collected stones which formed the background and worked together to make and glaze the many different figures.

Mural is still in the original location as of December 2008.

Martins Bank commissioned three murals before it was bought by Barclays Bank in 1969. The Bristol panel shows many of its landmark buildings including the Bristol Suspension Bridge, Cabot’s Tower and Victorian warehousing.

We suspect that this mural was destroyed when Martins Bank ceased to exist. We would be very grateful if anyone can tell us anything about its fate.
Martins Bank has an archival site which collects evidence of the varied art work commissioned by the bank over its years of existence. Three of my murals feature on the website www.martinsbank.co.uk

1967 Life in the West Riding of Yorkshire

1967 Life in the West Riding of Yorkshire - more info
more information

The theme of this mural was chosen to echo the dramatic changes of the West Riding, from timeless open moors to the industrialized cities. In a way it was a time capsule of sixties Yorkshire, with farming, mining, steel works and people of that particular time.

When they constructed the first floor "Food Village", the developers tried to move the mural, but it was damaged beyond repair in the process. So the mural has been lost.
