Philippa Threlfall has evolved a particular way of working in relief ceramic. She combines low relief modelling with rich texture and subtle colours, and often involves natural stone in the background. The ceramic pieces are then glazed with natural oxides, lustres, melted glass and original glazes and fired up to well over 1100°. Each ceramic piece is then embedded into a backing of polyester resin and fibreglass, sometimes with natural stone or slate, to form strong, weatherproof panels which are suitable for hanging indoors or outdoors

A way of reproducing panels from a clay original makes for more affordable artworks. The panels below are mainly repeating panels except where indicated. All prices shown here include VAT and shipping costs are not included.

Blue Fish

Richly textured and glazed fishes are set into a background of natural slate and sea pebbles.
These are all embedded into fibreglass and polyester resin to form a panel which can be screwed back onto the existing wall with concealed screws. Suitable for use indoors or out of doors - would look fabulous by water, a pool or garden feature.

Cherry

The panel is based on the image of a cherry surrounded by blossom and leaves which was made for a book of herbals published in Venice in 1565 by Petrus Andreas Matthiolus. This rose panel can be adapted to suit any space particularly as a larger freeform bush. The cherries are filled with red glass which catches the sunlight and gives a lively appearance to the panel.

Four Herbals

Four plant designs based on 16th century herbals (poppy, orange, lemon and pimpernel) are put together to form one panel. This frost-proof piece is glazed with natural oxides and copper lustres, and would look exciting with plants climbing around it in the growing season and add richness to a courtyard wall in winter.
This is a one-off panel due to the type of glazes used and the only version with four separate panels bonded together.

Four Seasons

The four Seasons (Bird - Spring, Summer - Hare, Autumn - Squirrel, Winter - Owl) are surrounded by a baroque cartouche based on 17th century designs. The panels are treated in different ways to give different qualities. This example is glazed in glowing manganese and lustres which would add richness to a courtyard wall in winter and look exciting with plants climbing around it in summer.

Grape Pickers

The panel is modelled in relief to give the character of the original “Grape Stealer” capital in the South transept of Wells Cathedral (fourteenth century.) The ceramic pieces are glazed with natural oxides and iron glaze and embedded into fibreglass and polyester resin to form a panel which can be screwed back onto the existing wall with concealed screws. Suitable for use indoors or out of doors.

Green Man (green glaze)

One piece ceramic depicting a Green Man, inspired by 13th century spandrel in Poitiers Cathedral, France. The panel is glazed with natural oxides and copper lustre, and is suitable for use indoors or out-of-doors. The Green Man would add richness to a courtyard wall in winter and look exciting with plants climbing around it in summer.

Green Man of Wells (honey glaze)

One piece ceramic panel based on the Green Man which forms a roof-boss in the Chapter House of Wells Cathedral. (Fourteenth century.) The panel is stained with glazed with natural oxides and red iron oxide glaze, and is suitable for use indoors or out-of-doors. The Green Man would add richness to a courtyard wall in winter and look exciting with plants climbing around it in summer.

Rose

The panel is based on the image of a rose seen with buds, full blooms and leaves which was made for a book of herbals published in Venice in 1565 by Petrus Andreas Matthiolus. This rose panel can be adapted to suit any space. A ceramic version of a natural rose could be made which could branch out over a wall to give constant colour and interest throughout the year. The rose petals are hollows in the clay which can be filled with a variety of glass colours including red, blue, yellow and white.

Still Life (in ash frame)

One of a limited edition of eighteen with richly modelled and glazed ceramic. The traditional cooking pots and implements set against a backing of terracotta tiles form a panel which would sit very happily or in a country kitchen or over an Aga stove. The high-fired ceramic and glazed surfaces are resistant to all heat and splashes and can easily be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Sunflower

The panel is based on the image of a sunflower (‘Helianthus Annuus’) engraved by John Gerade for his ‘Herball, or General Historie of Plants’, first published in London in 1597. This sunflower panel can be adapted to suit any space. A variant of this panel could be a long panel with many flowers creating an impression of a field of sunflowers or a double panel such as the one shown here on a terracotta coloured wall.
