MURALWATCH - do you have any information about this missing mural?
We suspect that this mural was destroyed when Martins Bank ceased to exist. We would be very grateful if anyone can tell us anything about its fate. Martins Bank has an archival site which collects evidence of the varied art work commissioned by the bank over its years of existence. Three of my murals feature on the website:
Martins Bank commissioned 3 murals before they were taken over by Barclays in 1969.
In the late sixties I was commissioned to design and make a panel for the Clifton Branch of Martins Bank. I visited Bristol and spent time making drawing and taking photographs. Living in London at the time, I remember thinking how very few high-rise buildings there were. I carried out a design based on facades of Bristol’s more interesting and historic landmark buildings including the Bristol Suspension Bridge, Cabot’s Tower and Victorian warehousing. The ceramic was embedded into cement on the surface of an especially made large concrete block. This panel was unusual in that a repeating pattern was created to hide the edge of the concrete block.
