MURALWATCH - do you have any information about this missing mural?
We suspect that this mural was destroyed when Martins Bank ceased to exist. We would be very grateful if anyone can tell us anything about its fate. Martins Bank has an archival site which collects evidence of the varied art work commissioned by the bank over its years of existence. Three of my murals feature on the website:
Martins Bank commissioned 3 murals before they were taken over by Barclays in 1969.
This panel was for the Martins Bank branch in Cheltenham. Older people will remember the wonderful great golden grasshoppers that used to hang outside branches of Martins Bank. I wanted to incorporate this logo. The resulting panel consisted of a four foot long ceramic grasshopper set into an elaborate cartouche. The whole was bonded onto stainless steel and mounted high up on the side of their building in Cheltenham. Shortly after my completing this panel, the Bank was taken over and its seven hundred branches became branches of Barclays. I never followed up the fate of the Martins murals. This building is now a branch of Cheltenham & Gloucester.
