MURALWATCH - do you have any information about this missing mural?
No details about this mural. Redland PLC was acquired by Lafarge 1997. The Redland House building was knocked down and replaced with a new office block which is the home of Esure.
Redlands had their own quarries for aggregate; they cast concrete including concrete pipes of huge dimensions and manufactured bricks and tiles for both roofs and floors. We were asked to think up a design for the entrance hall of their new head offices. We conceived the idea of a mosaic made from ceramic mixed with products produced by the company. Redlands provided the aggregates, tiles and (thin sections of) bricks together with rather beautiful polished sections of concrete piping. We could incorporate the thin bricks and flat tiles but not the roofing tiles with their distinctive humped profile. Our solution was to impress the sides of the Double Romans and other roof tiles into our clay to show their silhouettes. When fired this produced rippling abstract patterns. The mixed materials gave varying shapes and sizes, patterns and textures and it was interesting for the company to see their products used in this different context. Our concept was for the wall to give the feeling of urban development within a landscape: we titled the mural Cityscape.
