In the year 2000 we designed a new house and studio/workshops on the site of our old workshops in Tor Street in the cathedral city of Wells. The site is situated just to the east of Wells Cathedral. We were keeping the original stone wall of the building which faces onto the road but we wished to raise the roof height. To fill up the area formed by the new heightened gable end, the local planning authority (Mendip) suggested that we make a ceramic panel.
I based my design on stiff leaf carvings which appear in a blind arch on the west front of Wells Cathedral, adapting them to fit the triangular shape. Simply glazed with oxides and lustres the design now echoes the spirit of the majestic Cathedral which towers over our city.
